The Final Countdown |
July 15th 2002 |
Wayside @ Barfly on Wednesday, July 17th 2002, 12:00am BandFEST2002 Finals Address: 140 6th Street, New Westminster [Map]Phone Number: 604-519-0333 The bandFEST Lower Mainland Finals are coming up very soon... Wayside has advanced through 3 rounds in this CFOX sponsored battle-of-the-bands event. The next obstacle is the Finals. And now we need your support more than ever. Fan support is one of the judging criteria and so we need you. We have been handed the unfortunate midnight time slot. The benefit of this is that we'll be compared to the previous bands much like how voting occurs in figure skating. The obvious drawback is that it will be much harder to get people out to cheer for us due to the late time slot. Here is a recipe for staying up late for those that want to help us win this thing:
If you don't think you can stay up that late then come early and check out some of the earlier bands. Just mention that you're there to see Wayside at the door. That's good enough. We have been thinking long and hard about what we can do to provide some extra incentive for people to come to the show to support us. We came up with The Wayside Sweepstakes. Come to our show and you'll get a Wayside Sweepstakes card. The Wayside Sweepstakes Swing open the door on the Wayside Sweepstakes card to see what you have won... Possible prizes include free beer, Wayside T-Shirts, Wayside CDs and an A&B Sound Gift Certificate. All cards contain prizes. Prizes can be redeemed by one of the Wayside band members. One card allowed per person while quantities last. Those without cards should see the band members anyway. Those who win Wayside T-Shirts or CDs but already have them may request to have a beer instead. The Wayside Handbill If you do intend to make it out that night, please print out the handbill below and bring it with you to show to whoever is at the door. Please mention that you're there to see Wayside. If you have a Wayside T-Shirt, please wear it and show the judges that you're there to see us! Click here for a printable version of the handbill

more, please come out Wednesday to Barfly before Join our mailing list at the top of this page to get information on gig announcements and Wayside news. You can also find out more about bandFEST at their website here: www.bandfest.ca |

Wayside Advances To The bandFEST Semi-Finals |
June 27th 2002 |
What a sight... It was great to see everyone donning Wayside T-Shirts. The Wayside name was plastered all over Barfly... as well as all over its patrons. We ended up making 30 Wayside T-Shirts and all were gone. We couldn't ask for better fans!!! It was an extremely enjoyable gig for us. I know a lot of you came out of your way to see us in New West. Thanks for supporting us and for being great company. It was a fun night! Four bands performed including Wayside, Halogen, Well Oiled Machine and Harmless Heroes. Two bands moved on. Wayside came in first with 83% followed by Halogen with 79%. Check out the Reviews section for some of the judges comments that we received. Wayside Readies For Next Round of bandFEST2002 |
June 21st 2002 |
As many of you know
Wayside is participating in BandFEST2002 Lower Mainland (see details at
www.bandfest.ca).
We have advanced to the quarterfinals and our next showdown has been
announced. We are playing at Barfly (140 - 6th Street) in New West on
Wednesday June 26th at 9:30pm. While still not exactly on our home turf,
it's a lot closer than our last gig at Tommy's in Maple Ridge. Once again we would like to make a plea for fan support. 20% of our BandFEST score comes from the number of people we bring out and we really need to max this score to move to the next round. Now for the extra incentive: THE FIRST 20 PEOPLE TO ARRIVE AT BARFLY AND SAY THEY ARE THERE FOR WAYSIDE WILL WIN A BRAND NEW ******* WAYSIDE T-SHIRT ******* How's that for a deal.... the only catch is that you have to wear the T-Shirt that night to do a little promotion for us (another 20% of our score comes from promotion.) Hope to see you there. |
Wayside Relocates! |
June 17th 2002 |
We've moved.... just not physically. We have decided to make it a little easier for potential fans to remember our website address. Our existing address at http://www.wayside.dhs.org will exist for another month or so but our new website address is http://www.wayside.ca as of now. Unfortunately, Wayside Furniture managed to grab our dot com counterpart but we have managed secure the dot ca address allowing us to promote ourselves appropriately as Canadian.
Welcome

Wayside Advances In bandFEST2002 |
June 7th 2002 |
A big thanks goes out to all of our fans who came out to see us in Maple Ridge. It was a lot to ask and you guys came up big. Thanks for the support! Four bands performed that night (June 3rd 2002) including The Hits, Hardrive, Lester's Wagen and Wayside. Two bands advanced to the next round including Hardrive and Wayside with 82% and 81% respectively. Both excellent marks when compared to other winners of the first round. The following was written in the bandFEST write up: "Wayside made some new fans along the way including several of the judges..."
Stay tuned for more details regarding the next round of bandFEST. Join our mailing list at the top of this page to get information on gig announcements and Wayside news. You can also find out more about bandFEST at their website here: www.bandfest.ca |
Wayside Hits The Road For bandFEST2002 |
May 28th 2002 |
Wayside @ Tommy's Bar and Grill on Monday, June 3rd 2002
Address:
22222 Lougheed Hwy, Maple Ridge [Map] Wayside will begin its first tour on June 3rd... well sort of.... here's the deal. Wayside has been accepted as an entrant in BandFEST. This is basically a round-based battle of the bands, etc... etc... and we are in it... well sort of. We were supposed to participate in the Vancouver area BandFEST but we had to turn down our slot due to our drummer's solo tour of Ontario. We have, however, been accepted into the Fraser Valley version of BandFEST and are now scheduled to play in Maple Ridge on Monday, June 3rd. This is where we need some help. A major component of the judging criteria is fan support so please come and support the band. Check us out at 11pm - Tommy's Bar and Grill - 22222 Lougheed Highway, Maple Ridge - Monday June 3rd. There are four bands competing that night (beginning at 9pm), and we are the third band on. Follow the band to Maple Ridge and enjoy the Wayside soundtrack. If you do intend to make it out that night, please print out the handbill below and bring it with you to show to whoever is at the door. Mention that you're there to see Wayside. Click here for a printable version of the handbill.

Complete Rebirth |
April 23rd 2002 |
Wayside @ The Side Door on Friday, April 26th 2002
Side Door Address:
2291 West Broadway (2 blocks west of Arbutus) [Map] Wayside has had its fair share of imploding bassists. With all the excitement, Mark, their keyboardist at the time, decided to find out exactly what it was all about. So he packed up his keys and chose to use his magic fingers for the purposes of good. Thus our new bassist was born. Enter Trent... A prototype of guitar mastery. A sensei to those that don't know him but really really want to. He makes a mockery of guitar greats with one strum. Trent was chosen to lead us into temptation with his devilish glare and supernatural aura. New to the band but old to our ways. The Sticks of Chaos are the deadly weapons of our drummer Craig. He has chosen to harness their power for musical enjoyment rather than violence but those who cross him should fear for their existence for the Sticks of Chaos will spare no one. Drums should be wary too. Our front man Chris has led by example all these years with his unwavering determination and true grit. He changed his name from "Brilliance" to "Chris" due to modesty but outsiders will agree that he continually lives up to his birth name with his powerful vocals and guitar trickery. All have come together to share
their abilities and talents with those that come to witness them. The time
is coming. See Wayside at the Side Door this Friday April 26th 2002 at the
Side Door (on Broadway, 2 blocks West of Arbutus.)

Wayside Reunites With A New Look |
March 7th 2002 |
After taking a break for the summer,
the members of Wayside decided to get back together but this time we
wanted to try something a little different. Bill (our bassist at the time)
had moved on and so our keyboardist Mark decided to take over on bass.
With the loss of keyboards, we found a need to fill the void with a lead
instrument. We welcomed our new guitarist Trent into the band who quickly
developed his own style that fit extremely well with our sound.
In addition to the minor adjustments in the lineup, we decided to concentrate heavily on creating new material, only keeping our most popular songs in our repertoire. We have been working on writing and rehearsing since September 2001. We are excited about our new material and can't wait to perform it for everyone soon. |
Wayside Selected for New Music West 2001 |
May 2nd 2001 |
New Music West is one of the biggest West Coast music festivals in
Canada. It is an event that spans over four days (Thursday May 10th to
Sunday May 13th.)
It features lots of excellent bands and a variety of musical styles. It is a great chance
for bands to meet people in the industry and make a name for themselves. There were over
1000 entries and just over 200 hundred bands selected. We were selected as one of the bands
to be featured in the New Music West festival for the third year in a row.
Wayside will be performing at The Purple Onion Lounge on Thursday, May 10th 2001 at 12:00am sharp. Derek Hemmes will be filling in on bass for Bill Semrau for this show. For more information on the New Music West Festival including the event schedule, check out their website at: |
Wayside Performing at the Marine Club with Protoculture |
Wayside's
first gig with returning bassist Bill Semrau is scheduled for the Marine
Club [573 Homer Street] (phone: 683-1720) on Thursday November 9th 2000.
Wayside goes on stage at 10:00pm with Protoculture following soon after.

Bill Semrau Rejoins Wayside |
After a year's absence from the band, Bill Semrau has taken over bass duties from Derek Hemmes. The past month has been spent rehearsing old songs and working on new material. Bill is ready to return to the world of Corporate Rock! The addition of Bill is promising with solid bass playing and an extra set of vocals adding more harmonies to the Wayside songs. |
Wayside @ The Starfish Room |
![]() The Special Guests have just been signed to a multi-record deal by Attic who originally signed The Tragically Hip and The Watchmen. Come and see why. This will be their last show before they start working on their new album. Doors open at 9pm. Wayside goes on at 10pm. Book Thursday November 4th off and come and see some of the best bands Vancouver has to offer. |
Wayside At New Music West 1999 |
New Music West is one of the biggest West Coast music festivals in
Canada. It is an event that spans over three days (Thursday May 6th to Saturday May 8th.)
It features lots of excellent bands and a variety of musical styles. It is a great chance
for bands to meet people in the industry and make a name for themselves. There were over
1000 entries and only about a hundred bands selected. We were selected as one of the bands
to be featured in the New Music West festival. We performed to a packed house at the Picadilly Pub in downtown Vancouver. We opened the night on Friday May 7th at 9:30pm. Despite the brief set (only 30 minutes,) we set the tone for the rest of the evening. Adrenaline pumping and tension mounting, we produced a high energy set that seemed to impress the audience. We gave away over 25 CDs to celebrate the night. There are two video clips of our performance on this website in RealVideo format. Unfortunately, the quality is not the best but "Feels Good To Me" is available in the Music Section for your viewing pleasure. For more information on the New Music West Festival, check out their website at: |
Introducing Our New Bassist |
Deciding on a replacement in a band is quite a tough thing to do. Thankfully, the bassist that we selected fits in very well. Bill Semrau is new to the band but is picking it up faster than expected. His debut performance was at the Picadilly Pub for New Music West 1999. Our regular bassist, Derek Hemmes, has gone to Africa for half a year. |
Discorder Review |
Check out the February 1999 issue of The Discorder for a review of our debut CD "...Until Now". The Discorder review is also available in the Reviews section on this website. |
Vancouver Seeds 13 Released | |
![]() |
Vancouver Seeds 13 was released on January 11th 1999 and is now available at A&B Sound on Seymour Street (downtown Vancouver.) This CD features music from some of the best local bands in Vancouver. This is a product of an annual contest called DemoListen Derby which is put together by CFOX 99.3FM and the Pacific Music Industry Association. |
We would like to thank all the people involved in this
project. The music on the CD is quite diverse. Pick up a copy if you see it in the store. There are 15 tracks on the CD including a Wayside song called "Jubilee". Check out our Music section for a short clip of our latest song. |
Full Wayside Song Samples Online |
Special Thanks to Daniel Chosy who created a page for us with two
samples for people to listen to. Check out this web site: http://www.unsignedradio.com/wayside/wayside.html It features full length RealAudio files of Discontent and Return To Begin. Also see our Music Section for a full length version of Merger and Discontent along with clips of Return To Begin and our latest song, Jubilee in RealAudio format. Discontent is also available in MP3 format. |
DemoListen Derby '98 |
Vancouver's most
popular radio station, CFOX 99.3FM,
The Pacific Music Industry
Association, and Tom Lee Music sponsor a contest called DemoListen Derby every
year. Independent bands from around the province are asked to submit their demotapes and
CDs for consideration. There were approximately 300 entries in last year's event. A panel
of Music Industry professionals narrowed it down to these 12 semi-finalists: Bleed, James Grant and
the Small Mercies, Hissy Fit,
The Loving Dead,
Shannon Lyon, Pleasure, Random Damage, Susann Richter, 69km, Smarm,
ThreeSixty, Wayside.
In the second segment of the
contest, CFOX 99.3FM aired 1 song by each band each week for 3 weeks without mentioning
the name of the band. People had to call in a cast their votes.
They chose to play the first song
on our current EP "...Until Now" - Discontent. After the on-air portion of
the contest, the bands were narrowed down to 9.
Three bands played each week at
Studebaker's on March 26th, April 2nd and April 9th 1998.
March 26th - Hissy Fit, Pleasure,
Shannon Lyon April 2nd - Wayside, Three-Sixty, 69km April 9th - James Grant and the Small Mercies, The Loving Dead, Smarm The Finalists were announced on April 13th. They were Three-Sixty, James Grant and the Small Mercies and The Loving Dead. They played on April 16th. The winner of DemoListen Derby was a blues band called James Grant and The Small Mercies followed by ThreeSixty and The Loving Dead. As one of the 6 runners up, we won recording time at Turtle Studios and the Columbia Academy to record a song for the Vancouver Seeds 13 CD. We chose to record a catchy pop song called Jubilee. |
Internet Broadcast |
On Saturday the 21st of March, we were broadcasted over the Internet on a show that began at 7:00pm Vancouver time. It was aired on the Vancouver Live website. (www.travel-live.net) Derek, our bassist was sick so the rest of us played an acoustic set that included Why Believe?, Return To Begin, Discontent, Merger and Pop Song. Craig made a smooth transition from drums to bass. We were also interviewed before the performance. |
Wayside CD Release Party |
The CD Release Party is scheduled to be at
The Pit Pub at UBC on Thursday the 26th of March 1998. It starts at 9pm and cover is $5. Other bands will include: Speedbump Four Bone Chain Flannel Jimmy (the winner of Totem's Showarama contest) The new album is called "...until now". We recorded, mixed and mastered the album with Craig Zurba at MR&D Studios in Burnaby, BC. I've put a couple of sound samples from the new album. Be sure to check those out. There will only be 500 copies of this CD made unless it becomes extremely popular.... We'll be selling our CD through this web page soon so keep an eye out if you are interested. |
Showarama - Battle of the Bands |
On Saturday March 14th, we hosted Showarama at Totem residence at UBC. Showarama is a battle
of the bands between two residences - Totem Park and Vanier. We were the judges and played two
